Game Recap

Joy at W.C. Hinkley as Thunderbirds roll to Homecoming victory in home opener! Senior Calvin Pope led the charge with 3 rushing touchdowns and 178 yards to break Hinkley’s 13 game losing streak. The game started with 2 long rushing touchdowns by Pope to give the Thunderbirds a 14 point first quarter strike. Strong defensive stands and forced turnovers gave the offense another opportunity to score. A fourth down conversion received by Senior Casey Sharpe with long runs by sophomore Richard Taylor and Senior Taywon Bryant brought Hinkley to the 1 yard line where sophomore J.J. Lee punched it in for the score giving Hinkley a 21 piont lead going into halftime break.
Returning at the half Hinkley’s defense stepped up for some strong stands inside the red zone as Thornton threatened late in the game. Leading the Thunderbird swarm was the linebacker crew of sophomores Urias Gbarjolo, Richard Taylor, Jerry Taylor; and Juniors Aaron Coats with Harlan Potts. Other defensive standouts were Armando Rivera, Rajhi Shabazz, and Jonathan Hernandez who all came up big late in the contest.
